Welcome to Dorf Tirol, with ancient walls, fragrant gardens and unforgettable views.

Because the real deal is often closer than you think. To truly experience Merano and its surroundings, you don't always have to follow the signs. Sometimes it’s worth taking a turn – onto a quiet path, to a viewpoint without railings, or into a tavern that’s never made it to Instagram. Our favorite tips? Authentic, personal, and slightly off the beaten path – collected for those in search of the original.

OBERKASER ALM AND THE SPRONSER LAKES

The Oberkaseralm - you can't get any higher in Dorf Tirol!

At 2,149 meters, you can not only enjoy home-bred lamb and dumplings with a view, but also the highest bar in the area. Those who make it up here will be rewarded with a panoramic view, homemade butter and probably the most deserved “Speckbrettl” of their lives.

SALTEN - VIEW OF THE DOLOMITES

On the Salten, Europe's largest larch plateau, the Dolomite show is right at your feet - and without any entrance fee!

While golden larches glow and cosy cows stare, the view extends from the Adige Valley deep into the rock cinema of the Dolomites.

RIFUGIO CANZIANI IN THE RUSTIC ULTEN VALLEY

Ulten - the rustic valley of larches and shingle roofs! The trail to the Rifugio Canziani leads you from the turquoise-blue Weißbrunn lake through golden forests to the sparkling Green lake. At the top there's a panoramic view, dumplings and a real mountain hut feeling.

Pizzeria Relax

izzeria and vinotheque - The ‘Pizzanotheque’

Restaurant Patriarch

Traditional South Tyrolean dishes - from grandma's cookery book - or light Italian pasta dishes.

Restaurant Brunnenplatz

South Tyrolean cuisine that makes you feel like you're in the mountains - only without the hike, but with a full belly instead.

Trauttmansdorff

The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle in Merano are the only place where you can stroll through a tropical plant paradise and then suddenly end up in an Alpine farm garden with goats and apples - all without changing countries! There are 80 different gardens spread over 12 hectares, ranging from the Mediterranean coast to the tropical rainforest.

Lumen

LUMEN - the only museum that aims as high as your mountain dreams! Everything here revolves around mountain photography, panorama madness and the perfect snow shot. The exhibitions are as cool as the peaks outside - only without the cold feet. Travelling through the Alps with just one click, without blisters on your feet? Off to the top, culture and views come in a double pack!

Tyrol Castle

Tyrol Castle - the name sounds majestic, and it is! The ancestral castle of the Counts of Tyrol, who not only shaped the land but also its name. Here you can stroll through the medieval halls as if you were a count or countess travelling back in time. And when you've had enough of the Middle Ages, you can visit the spectacular flight demonstrations at Gufyland - South Tyrol's only care centre for birds of prey and owls. Experience how eagles, vultures, falcons, owls and buzzards circle majestically above the castle hill.
